The Woodville - Celebrating 50 Years!

The Woodville, at Wrotham Road in Gravesend, was officially opened on Friday, November 15 1968, by Her Royal Highness, the Duchess of Kent.

Designed by architects H.T Cadbury-Brown and Partners, who were followers of the modernist school of architecture and heavily influenced by the work of Walter Gropius and Le Corebusier, the building was state of the art at the time.

It offered a range of events, from pantomime to weddings, ballroom dancing to boxing and, of course, theatre.

Over the years, the Blake Gallery, the Paul Greengrass cinema and Studio Theatre have all been added to the range of creative opportunities that exist within the building, on Community Square.

Many famous faces have stepped through the theatre’s doors, including Genesis, Supertramp, Status Quo, ELO, Thin Lizzy, 10CC, Leo Sayer, Roy Wood’s Wizzard and, more recently, director Paul Greengrass, actor and writer Alex Jennings, Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr, Jane Mcdonald, Joe McElderry, G4, Romesh Ranganathan, Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee, Jim Davidson, Damon Beesley and the cast of The Inbetweeners - to name just a few!

As a part of our 50th anniversary celebrations at The Woodville we are offering couples the opportunity to renew their vows for free this year at the Woodville, in the Kent Room, with up to 50 guests. This amazing offer will include the venue, Celebrant to officiate the ceremony, Bouquet and Decorations, Dove Release, Photographer, Wedding Cake and Champagne on Arrival.

All you need to do to enter and be in with a chance to win is send us a private message on Facebook telling us why you would like to renew your wedding vows at the Woodville, and let us know if you have had some romantic association with The Woodville, maybe you shared your first dance here, or you were both in a show? Perhaps you have seen lots of Panto's together here?

Mandy Hare – Theatre Manager, who will be qualifying as a celebrant for Vow Renewals prior to the ceremony, said: “We will be making this day really special for a married couple that would like to officially renew their vows. I am delighted to have the opportunity to become a celebrant and to have the privilege of sharing such a special moment for our Woodville couples. We will work together to create an unforgettable and romantic experience.
